Are you considering Le Creuset or are new to Le Creuset cookware? Here are answers to a few frequently asked questions:...
What makes Le Creuset so good?
Their unmatched cooking performance and stylish colourways have made Le Creuset a home cook favourite, and professionally reviewed top pick for decades. Their pieces are known for being extremely durable, consistently functional, and absolutely beautiful. Whether you need to slow cook, bake bread, or sear steak, their enamelled cast-iron pieces are a joy to cook with and will be passed from one generation to the next. More recently, they’ve introduced triple ply stainless steel cookware with a lifetime guarantee, and durable toughened non-stick pans to round out their offerings. This, with their broad collection of ceramic bakers, kitchen accessories, and coffee & tea vessels make Le Creuset a ‘go-to’ at Cookery.
Where is Le Creuset cookware made?
Le Creuset’s enamelled cast iron cookware is, and always has been handcrafted in France. Their triple ply stainless steel is made in Portugal, and their non-stick pans and ceramics are made in Asia. Regardless of manufacturing origin, Le Creuset offers post purchase support for every piece they sell, right here in Canada.
Can Le Creuset cookware go in the oven?
Yes, all Le Creuset cookware is oven-safe – regardless of what material it is made from. The material, from ceramics to steel, to cast iron, to non-stick coated aluminum, determines what kind of heat (roasting, baking, or broiling), and what level of heat (degrees) is best for your cookware. Check the Usage & Care guidelines included with your purchase for specifics for your piece.
Can you use Le Creuset on induction cooktops?
Yes, any piece of cookware that is meant for the stovetop (all but ceramic cookware), is also induction ready.
Is Le Creuset non-stick?
Some yes and some no. Le Creuset offers a specific line of toughened non-stick pans. Their non-stick products feature a superior coating that is durable enough to withstand metal utensils, and resistant to chipping and flaking given it is wrapped all the way around the pan from the inside to the outside. It is important to note that all non-stick cookware, regardless of manufacturer or origin performs longest and best at low heat. Repeated and extended high heat will significantly lower the lifespan of your pan.
Le Creuset enamelled cast iron cookware with the black coating (skillets and grills) is also said to be able to offers some ‘ease of release’ properties, naturally. As your cookware is used with cooking oils, and the oil naturally found in your food, these will leave a rich patina on your cookware. If you are careful to not scrub these off, your cookware will develop a naturally low stick surface.
Is Le Creuset dishwasher-safe?
Most Le Creuset products are dishwasher-safe. Enamelled cast-iron and stainless steel cookware is dishwasher-safe. Products with wooden handles should be hand washed. If you aren’t sure that your Le Creuset product is dish-washer safe, opt for a hand wash, or refer to their website for product specific care instructions.
Do I need to season my Le Creuset cast-iron skillet?
With Le Creuset products, there’s no seasoning required! Le Creuset enamelled cast-iron skillets and grill pans are finished with several layers of matte black porcelain enamel. This means that you’re never cooking on raw cast-iron. This also means the cast iron is never exposed to the air – so, no rust and therefore, no need for seasoning. You can put it in the dishwasher, and you can also let it air dry – a no-no for regular cast iron. It’s super ‘easy care’.
However, after washing your skillet, you may wish to condition it. To condition your skillet or grill pan cooking surface, simply apply a small amount of vegetable oil. Remove the excess oil with a paper towel and store it for your next use!
How do I remove tough food residue or grease marks from my Le Creuset cookware?
These are signs of cookware well used and well loved. Here is a tried-and-true method for cleaning:
For stainless steel & enamelled cast iron, add a ½ inch of water to your pot or pan and bring to a simmer on low heat on the stovetop.
Turn off the heat and immediately use a wooden spoon or wooden spatula to scrape off the tough food residue in the hot water.
When the pan is no longer hot to the touch, finish it off in the sink, scrubbing with a non-abrasive / non-scratching scrubbing pad and dish detergent.
For more stubborn residue, use Bar Keepers Friend scouring powder instead of dish detergent. If you need one more step, make a paste with your scouring powder and a bit of water and leave it on your pan for 30 minutes, then scrub again.
All Le Creuset pans without wooden handles or knobs can also be washed in the dishwasher, but be careful, some dishwasher racks may not be able to handle the weight of bigger Le Creuset enamelled cast iron pieces.
Always towel or air dry your pans before storing.
How do I remove stains from Le Creuset enamel?
Le Creuset enamelled cast iron cookware is expected to age and show signs of use. In fact, many think that each mark adds character to your cookware. But if you are committed to removing stains, use the following steps for best results:
Take one part enzymatic laundry detergent and three parts water to fill your pot. The great majority of commercial laundry detergents will contain the enzymes needed to remove stains.
Next, boil the solution for 10 minutes
Let cool, and discard the solution
Wash the pot with regular dish detergent, rinse, and dry.
A thin coating of white vinegar is also said to bring back the initial shine of your enamel.
